President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, to proceed on terminal leave as his tenure draws to a close.
The directive, confirmed by senior government officials on Tuesday, signals the beginning of the transition process at Nigeria’s electoral body. Yakubu, who has served as INEC Chairman since 2015, oversaw two general elections, including the 2023 polls that brought Tinubu to power.
While the presidency has yet to issue an official statement detailing the reasons for the move, insiders suggest it is part of standard administrative procedure to allow for a smooth handover. The decision comes at a critical time, with calls for electoral reforms and debates about INEC’s performance still fresh in Nigeria’s political discourse.
Analysts note that Yakubu’s departure could pave the way for the appointment of a successor who will shape the conduct of future elections, including the 2027 general elections. The presidency is expected to announce an acting chairman in the coming days.
